If you are planning an addition to a residential property, whether adding space or modifying what already exists, approvals are required to ensure your project meets safety codes and land use regulations.
Residential additions and alterations may include:
- additions that increase the size of your home (e.g., new rooms or floor area)
- attached structures that form part of the main dwelling
- structural changes (e.g., removing or adding walls, modifying rooflines)
- interior renovations that change layout or building systems
- exterior modifications that are not covered under a specific project page
- modifying window or door openings
For specific renovation projects (such as decks, garages, basement development, or secondary suites), please refer to the dedicated pages listed below:
1. Do You Need a Development Permit First?
You will need to obtain a Development Permit when planning to build an Addition, or altering an existing residential building.
A Development Permit is required if your project involves:
- increasing building size or footprint
- changes that affect setbacks, height, or lot coverage
- additions or exterior changes that impact site layout
If you are unsure, or would like to set up a Pre-Planning meeting, please contact the Development and Planning department.
2.Building Permit Requirements
Once your Development Permit is approved, you may apply for a Building Permit.
A Building Permit ensures that construction meets:
- The Alberta Building Code
- Applicable safety codes and regulations
3. Additional Permits You May Need
Depending on your project, additional permits may also be required:
- Electrical Permit
- Plumbing Permit
- Gas Permit
The trade permits are issued through the Town's contracted Inspection agency.
For application forms, requirements and fees, visit the Building Permit Applications & Fees page.
4. Inspections
All permitted work is subject to inspection to ensure compliance with applicable codes.
Please ensure:
- Required inspections are booked at the appropriate stages (as outlined in your Plans Review)
- Work is not covered before inspection approval
Visit our Inspection Requirements page for details.
